Here are five fascinating facts about Peppers:

  1. Botanically a Fruit: Like tomatoes and avocados, bell peppers are botanically classified as fruits because they contain seeds that develop from the plant's flower.
  2. Come in Many Colors: While green, red, yellow, and orange are common, peppers can also be purple, brown, black, and even white. Green peppers are unripe red, yellow, or orange peppers.
  3. Heat Measured in Scoville Units: The pungency or "heat" of chili peppers is measured on the Scoville scale, which was invented by American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville in 1912.
  4. Not Related to Black Pepper: Despite the name, bell peppers and chili peppers are members of the Capsicum genus and are not related to black pepper (Piper nigrum), which comes from a different plant.
  5. Loaded with Vitamin C: Red bell peppers contain more Vitamin C than an orange. They are also a good source of Vitamin A and various antioxidants.
