Happy October, Everybody 🌍
Welcome to the October edition of our monthly newsletter, where crisp autumn breezes signal a new phase in our sustainable gardening journey. As the foliage transforms and cooler days set in, October offers U.S. gardeners a chance to relish fall colors while preparing their green spaces for winter.
In this issue, we’ll explore:
- Seasonal Décor with Harvest Finds: Use pumpkins, gourds, and squash from your garden to create eco-friendly centerpieces and wreaths.
- Soil & Garden Bed Prep: Learn sustainable techniques, such as mulching with fallen leaves and cover cropping, to protect and enrich the soil through the colder months.
- Fall Planting: Discover which cool-weather crops—such as kale, Brussels sprouts, and garlic—thrive when planted in October’s moderate temperatures.
- Local Events: From pumpkin patch visits to community harvest festivals, find out where to connect with fellow gardeners and celebrate the season.
We have added some new articles to our website, including ones about "How to Cut a Pear and "Best Microgreen Grow Kit."

Here are five amazing facts about Dragon Fruit:
- A Night-Blooming Cactus
Dragon fruit comes from cacti in the genus Hylocereus and Selenicereus, whose large white flowers bloom only at night and are often pollinated by bats and moths.
-
Multiple Color Varieties
There are three main types:
- White-fleshed (Hylocereus undatus) with pink skin
- Magenta-fleshed (H. costaricensis) with red skin
- Yellow-skinned (Selenicereus megalanthus) with white flesh
- Tiny Edible Seeds
Those black speckles throughout the flesh are tiny seeds you can eat—packed with healthy fats, fiber, and a mild crunch akin to kiwi.
- Rich in Antioxidants
Dragon fruit’s vivid pigments (betacyanins in red varieties and betaxanthins in yellow) offer antioxidant properties that help neutralize free radicals and support skin health.
- Global Cultivation
Though native to Central America, it’s now commercially grown across Southeast Asia (notably Vietnam and Thailand), Australia, and even southern California, thanks to its adaptability to arid climates.
