Here are five amazing facts about Ghost Peppers:
- Extreme Heat Level: The ghost pepper, also known as Bhut Jolokia, held the Guinness World Record for the hottest chili pepper from 2007 to 2011. It typically measures over 1 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making it hundreds of times hotter than a jalapeño.
- Origin in India: This super-hot chili originated in the Northeast Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur. The name "Bhut Jolokia" translates to "Ghost Chili" in the Assamese language, likely due to its ghostly bite that creeps up on you.
- Hybrid Pepper: The ghost pepper is a natural hybrid pepper believed to be a cross between Capsicum frutescens and Capsicum chinense.
- Culinary and Non-Culinary Uses: Beyond its use in extremely spicy foods, sauces, and curries, the ghost pepper has also been employed in non-culinary ways. In parts of India, it's used as a deterrent in smoke bombs and even smeared on fences to keep wild elephants away.
- Requires Careful Handling: Due to their intense heat, ghost peppers require caution when handling. It's often recommended to wear gloves when cutting them to avoid skin irritation and to be careful not to touch your eyes or other sensitive areas.
